Cardenas pursues Secretary of state

Assemblyman Tony Cardenas Tony Cardenas served in the California State Assembly. In the Assembly, he had the powerful position of chair of the Budget Committee. He is now a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 6th district, which includes parts of the San Fernando Valley. , D-Mission Hills, said Wednesday that he will run for California secretary of state in the March 2002 primary.

Cardenas and former state Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi filed papers this month with the Secretary of State's Office to organize fund- raising committees to campaign for the job.

Murder-for-hire plotter gets life

A 39-year-old Glendale woman who hired a hit man to kill her lover's wife was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

A state jury found Rosa Maldonado guilty last month of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and solicitation of murder for the Nov. 4, 1999, attack on Olga Olguin, who survived being shot in the head.

Graffiti defendant told to clean up

A Canoga Park man pleaded no contest Wednesday to spray-painting graffiti on a Metrolink railway tunnel in Chatsworth and was sentenced to 45 days on a Caltrans or graffiti-removal work crew.

San Fernando Superior Court Judge Robert J. Schuit also banned Andy William Rizo, 19, from railroad property for three years, said Deputy City Attorney Jina Kim.

Smoking battery closes roadway

CAMARILLO - A large battery used for backing up a computer fell off a pickup truck Wednesday, causing smoke that shut down Santa Rosa Road between Verdugo Way and Adolfo Road for two hours, the Ventura County Fire Department Not to be confused with Ventura Fire Department.

The Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD) provides fire protection and emergency response services for the unincorporated areas of Ventura County, California, and for six other cities within the county.

Collision ties up traffic on freeway

AGOURA HILLS - A crash involving a tanker truck and two vehicles tied up traffic Wednesday evening on the westbound Ventura (101) Freeway.

California Highway Patrol Officer Charles Blair said the crash occurred at 7 p.m. on the westbound Ventura Freeway at Parkway Calabasas.
