BRIEFLY VALLEY DEM GROUP BACKS HERTZBERG.

 Young Democrats are supporting former Assembly Speaker Bob Hertzberg for the job, a spokesman said Monday.

The Valley organization plans to provide volunteers and commit part of its $13,000 annual operating budget to the Hertzberg campaign, said David Phelps, president of the group.

Last week the Los Angeles County Democratic Party and the Los Angeles County Young Democrats split over a mayoral endorsement. Hertzberg, a Democrat from Sherman Oaks, is running against Mayor James Hahn, Council members Antonio Villaraigosa and Bernard Parks, state Sen. Richard Alarcon and several minor candidates in the March 8 primary.

New national park to be considered

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., introduced a bill Monday to require a study of whether a corridor that includes the mountains around the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys should become a national park.

The legislation would direct the Interior Department to study potential effects on the region's landowners and wildlife, including endangered species endangered species, any plant or animal species whose ability to survive and reproduce has been jeopardized by human activities. Task force to fight human trafficking

A coalition of federal, state and local agencies Monday announced the formation of a task force to battle human trafficking that the Los Angeles police chief, William Bratton, called ``tantamount to slavery.''

The task force was established to ``bring together law enforcement and community-based organizations to put an end to to destroy.
