Hahn urges rules to bypass tragedy

In the wake of recent nightclub disasters in Chicago and West Warwick, R.I., that took at least 118 lives, Mayor James Hahn on Thursday urged tougher restrictions on Los Angeles gatherings of more than 50 people.

Hahn, in a letter to the chair of the City Council's Public Safety Committee, recommended that announcements indicating the location of all exits be required at indoor venues, and emergency exit plans - similar to those found in hotel rooms - be posted in nightclub restrooms and lobby areas.

The LAX master plan will receive priority environmental reviews as outlined under President Bush's Executive Order on Environmental Stewardship.

The action means Hahn's proposal for LAX, which would focus on security rather than expansion, will be shepherded through the review process by federal officials to ensure it is not unnecessarily delayed.
