BRIEFLY USOC TARGETS 2012 BIDS.

Amid renewed optimism that the United States has a chance of landing the 2012 Summer Olympics, U.S. Olympic officials have established a task force and set dates for visits to the eight cities vying for the bid, including Los Angeles.

See 568A.  will pick an American bid city in October 2002. That city will compete with other bidding cities from around the world for the rights to the 2012 Games.

Members of the task force will begin with a June 10-13 visit to Washington, D.C., followed by stops in Dallas (June 18-21), Houston (July 16-19), Cincinnati (July 23-26), New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
 (July 30-Aug. 2), Tampa, Fla. (Aug. 2-5), San Francisco (Aug. 20-23) and Los Angeles (Aug. 23-26).

LEGISLATION: Backers of legal sports betting nearly pulled an upset Thursday, falling only one vote short of derailing a bill considered the chief threat in Congress to America's casino industry.

The Senate Commerce Committee split 10-10 over whether to gut a bill outlawing betting on college sports, which is legal only in Nevada. The tie vote meant the bill survived and now goes to the full Senate.

TENNIS: The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team will play No. 11 Fresno State in the NCAA Tournament regionals on May 12 at Fresno State. GYMNASTICS: UCLA's Mohini Bhardwaj, the NCAA NCAA

National Collegiate Athletic Association
 floor exercise champion while leading the Bruins to a second consecutive team title, won the Honda Award as the top college woman gymnast for the 2000-01 season.

Bhardwaj, an 11-time All-American and winner of the AAI AAI American Association of Immunologists.  American Award as the nation's top senior gymnast, scored 39.975 in the all-around, the second-highest score in NCAA history.

COLLEGES: UCLA water polo player Sean Kern and Bruins volleyball player Elisabeth Bachman are among 58 postgraduate scholarship winners announced by the NCAA. The scholarships are worth $5,000.
