Four neighborhood councils in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
 have reached an agreement with the Los Angeles Department of Public Works to involve them in planning projects such as street repairs and tree trimming, officials said Monday.

The advisory panels in Studio City, Valley Village, central North Hollywood and Toluca Lake will be consulted when the department develops its periodic work plans for the areas, said University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission  professor Terry Cooper, who helped broker the agreement as part of the university's Neighborhood Participation Project.

Cooper said the pact between the neighborhood councils and Public Works is intended as a model for other advisory councils and other city departments.

Man pleads guilty to abuse of son

An Oxnard man pleaded guilty Monday to felony child-abuse charges for dipping his 3-year-old son into scalding scalding

Body discovered inside burned car

SYLMAR - A charred body was found Monday inside the trunk of a Mercedes sedan that appeared to have been intentionally set on fire, officials said.

Firefighters responded to a report of a car fire about 4 a.m. in an alley near Foothill Boulevard and Arroyo Street. ``They extinguished the fire and found a body inside that was burned beyond recognition,'' said Sgt. Foundation hosts fund-raiser dance

Local environmentalists will host a western dance and barbecue Saturday at the Cowboy Palace Saloon in Chatsworth to raise money for preservation of the Santa Susana Mountains The Santa Susana Mountains are a transverse range of mountains in southern California, north of the city of Los Angeles, in the United States. The range runs east-west separating the San Fernando Valley and Simi Valley on its south from Santa Clara River Valley to the north and .

The Foundation for the Preservation of the Santa Susana Mountains event costs $15 per person and $25 per couple. There's a no-host bar with a percentage of the proceeds going to the foundation. Meet-and-greet new schools chief

GLENDALE - The school board will host a get-acquainted reception welcoming Superintendent Mike Escalante to Glendale from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the district's Administration Center at 223 N. Jackson St.

Man, 72, believed to have shot self

LAKE VIEW TERRACE - The body of a 72-year-old man who apparently committed suicide was discovered inside his vehicle Sunday night, coroner's officials said.
