 defensive end Dave Ball, who leads the nation with 16.5 sacks, was named first-team All-America by the Football Writers Association of America The Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) is one of the organizations whose College Football All-America Team is recognized by the NCAA. The organization also selects the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner, the Outland Trophy .

Ball and junior receiver Craig Bragg were selected as winners of the Henry R. ``Red'' Sanders Award for most valuable player at the 85th annual UCLA football awards banquet Sunday night.

--Texas quarterback Chance Mock, who lost his starting job to freshman Vince Young, will consider transferring next season to seek more playing time, his father told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

--Stanford backup quarterback Trent Edwards will remain hospitalized through the weekend after undergoing emergency surgery on his injured left thigh.

--Nathaniel Skaggs, an offensive lineman from Rancho Bernardo High of San Diego, gave UCLA an oral commitment this week.

Skaggs also had offers from UNLV UNLV University of Nevada, Las Vegas  and San Diego State and was being recruited by several Pacific-10 Conference schools.
