The United States is the front-runner to host this year's Women's World Cup The Women's World Cup could refer to either the:
  • FIFA Women's World Cup
  • UCI Women's Road World Cup
  • Women's Cricket World Cup
  • Women's Rugby World Cup
 after the tournament was moved from China because of SARS, the president of soccer's governing body said Wednesday.

The 16-nation event originally was scheduled for Sept. 23 to Oct. 11, but FIFA FIFA International Association Football Federation [French Fédération Internationale de Football Association]

The United States, which staged the tournament in 1999, has applied to hold the event. Sweden, Italy and Australia also have expressed interest.

``I think the front-runner is the U.S., as always,'' FIFA president Sepp Blatter said. ``It's a very serious contender.

``They have shown us how good they can organize a women's World Cup because of the importance of women's football and the perception by the public of women's football in the country.''

--The U.S. Under-23 men's team beat Mexico 3-1 in Zapopan, Mexico, even though the Americans played the last 32 minutes one man short.

The U.S. goals were scored by Kelly Gray, Alecko Eskandarian and David Testo.
