Separate cases of West Nile virus West Nile virus, microorganism and the infection resulting from it, which typically produces no symptoms or a flulike condition. The virus is a flavivirus and is related to a number of viruses that cause encephalitis.  were reported Thursday in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  and Orange counties.

An elderly Long Beach man became the first person in that city confirmed to have contracted the virus, which is spread to humans by mosquitoes that have bitten sick birds. And a 41-year-old man recovering from meningitis has been confirmed as the second case of West Nile virus detected in Orange County.

So far two people in have died in California this year from the disease, both in the Southland.

'Dirty bomb' first of planned drills

A ``dirty bomb'' exercise at the Port of Los Angeles The Port of Los Angeles is located on San Pedro Bay in the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles, approximately 20 miles (30 km) south of downtown. Also called Los Angeles Harbor and WORLDPORT LA  Thursday signaled the start of a series of drills designed to test the readiness of California's first responders.

John Miller, the Los Angeles Police Department's top terrorism chief, said the exercise wasn't meant to go smoothly.

``We've made it hard on purpose because we're trying to see where the cracks are,'' he said.

Today, a ``train derailment'' drill in Oxnard will test the ability of the state's mutual aid system to support local and state response efforts.

Motorcyclist dies in crash with auto

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - A 21-year-old Simi Valley man died early Thursday after his motorcycle was involved in a collision at Sycamore Drive near Niles Avenue, police said.

Nicholas Dominique's motorcycle collided about 1:30 a.m. with a vehicle driven by Daniel Martinez, 59, who was making a U-turn, authorities said. The motorcyclist, whom police say appeared to be driving at a high rate of speed, was hurled 100 feet into a parked vehicle.

Witnesses sought in crash of cycle

BURBANK - Police sought witnesses Thursday to a crash that killed a motorcyclist and critically injured his passenger, police said.

Theodore Green, 21, of Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, , was killed and Corey Petrie, 19, of Sun Valley, was critically injured at 10 p.m. Tuesday when their motorcycle hit the curb at Riverside and Beachwood drives, officials said.

David Wayne (January 30 1914 - February 9 1995) was a Tony Award-winning American actor with a career spanning nearly half a century.
 Echols, 20, walked away from the Camarillo Airport about 2 p.m. Wednesday, sheriff's Sgt. Kory Martinelli said.

Echols was serving a 150-day sentence for petty theft and being under the influence of drugs.

Echols is described as 5 feet, 11 inches tall, 200 pounds, with shaved blond hair, a goatee, and a tattoo of a skeleton on his upper right arm. Anyone with information is asked to call (805) 654-5161.

Fair's opening day attendance up 9%

VENTURA - Attendance at the opening day of the Ventura County Fair was up 9 percent from last year, fair officials said Thursday.

Nearly 16,000 visitors attended Wednesday's opening day, compared to 14,500 in 2003, fair spokesman John Lockhart said.

Last year, attendance topped 308,000, the fair's highest turnout ever, Lockhart said.

The fair continues through Aug. 15 at Seaside Park in Ventura.
