VENTURA - A 51-year-old Ventura man was killed early Friday when he was hit by a tow truck as he walked across the Ventura Freeway The Ventura Freeway is a freeway in southern California running from Ventura to Pasadena. It is the principal east-west route through Ventura County and in the southern San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County.  east of the Main Street on-ramp, officials said.

Robert Wayne Beckner, 51, was pronounced dead at 12:35 a.m., officials said.

Beckner was hit by a tow truck driven by Christopher Rotundo, 29, of Ventura, who tried to swerve around the pedestrian, officials said. Rotundo was not cited.

Auto repair shop owner sentenced

The owner of a now-closed Northridge auto body repair shop was sentenced Friday to 45 days in jail or on a work crew for charging customers and insurance companies for the same work.

City will not hold special election

Man's body found hanged in jail cell

Yaroslavsky joins corrections board

The state Senate confirmed Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky as a member of the California Board of Corrections, he said Friday.

Yaroslavsky was appointed by Gov. Gray Davis last March. The board was created in 1944 to help develop and maintain standards to build and operate local jails and juvenile detention facilities.

The board also hires and trains local corrections and probation personnel, inspects local detention facilities, awards training funds, conducts studies involving public safety and administers construction grants, juvenile crime and delinquency program, and those for mentally ill inmates.
