BRIEFLY TRANSIENT FOUND FATALLY STABBED.


WOODLAND HILLS - A 54-year-old transient was found stabbed to death early Saturday in the 22500 block of Ventura Boulevard Ventura Boulevard is one of the primary east-west thouroughfares in the San Fernando Valley; as it was originally a part of the El Camino Real (the trail between Spanish missions), Ventura Boulevard is the oldest route in the San Fernando Valley. It was also U.S. , Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  police said.

A pedestrian found the victim lying in a parking lot adjacent to a carwash, and paramedics dispatched about 3:15 a.m. declared the man dead at the scene, said Los Angeles police Officer Jack Richter.

``The incident occurred in a small enclosure in which the victim had been sleeping, located on the property of a carwash,'' Richter said in a statement. ``The motive for the killing is unknown, although robbery has been eliminated.''

Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to call the West Valley homicide detectives.

Malibu kayaker presumed dead

MALIBU - An air and sea search ended Saturday night as authorities failed to find a 55-year-old kayaker separated from his craft the day before during strong winds.

 of Malibu is presumed to be dead, said U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Drew Cromwell. Authorities said Buttle wore no life vest.

``The chances of anyone surviving more than seven hours in water that's 48 degrees just wearing a T-shirt and shorts is nil,'' Cromwell said.

Buttle and fellow kayaker Eric Alan Hammer, 20, of Westlake Village, called for help on a mobile telephone Friday afternoon when they encountered trouble after having gone to work on an anchored yacht.

Hammer was rescued after being spotted from a U.S. Coast Guard cutter with the kayak about three miles off the coast, authorities said.

Fire crews on alert as Santa Anas stay

Firefighters were on heightened alert Saturday for brush fires as Santa Ana conditions continued in the region, authorities said.

Man dies after found at store

OXNARD - A 24-year-old man died after he was found lying on the floor of an Oxnard liquor store with a gunshot wound in his chest, officials said Saturday.

Suspect arrested in hit-run crash

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - A man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of felony hit and run after his Honda collided with a with a van full children and he fled on foot, police said.

An adult and a child were airlifted to Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center where they were listed in stable condition following the 5 p.m. crash at Vanowen Street and Laurelgrove Avenue, police said. Another adult and several children who suffered minor injuries were transported to Valley Presbyterian Hospital.

The suspect was arrested several hours later at his North Hollywood home, police said.
