BRIEFLY TASK FORCE FOUND 8,700 POT PLANTS.


VENTURA - Three marijuana plantations with more than 8,700 plants valued at $26 million were seized in northern Ventura County, officials said Friday.

The sites included one near Pine Mountain with 6,647 plants that were destroyed Aug. 17, another between Wheeler Gorge and Bellyache bel·ly·ache

 Springs with 2,026 plants eradicated Aug. 19, and a smaller site near the Highway 33 tunnel with 67 plants also destroyed Aug. 19.

More building site items recovered

THOUSAND OAKS - Ventura County sheriff's investigators have found thousands of additional stolen items valued at over $500,000 since announcing earlier this week the arrests of 28 people in connection with a burglary ring that targeted builders and landscapers.

Authorities also have received 2,300 inquiries about recovering stolen property.

Appeal rejected in nephew's death

 panel upheld the voluntary manslaughter conviction of a former reserve police officer in the shooting death of his 35-year-old nephew.

The three-justice panel from the 2nd District Court of Appeal rejected Phillip Norman Perry's claim that there were errors in his trial in Pasadena Superior Court.

Perry, who was 55 at the time of the crime, shot and killed his nephew, Phillip Andrew Perry, early in the morning of Sept. 3, 2001. Perry claimed his nephew choked him and he fired at him some time later in self-defense.

Perry was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in October 2002 and sentenced in January 2003 to 10 years in state prison.

 board votes to settle claims

The mother of a woman struck by a bus while crossing a downtown street will receive $750,000 from the MTA, while another woman injured on a bus will get $450,000, officials said Friday.

Candelaria Guzman, 81, sued the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and bus driver Delores Fernandez Flores Flores, town, Guatemala

 last year for the wrongful death of her daughter. The suit alleged that Ana Cecilia Sanchez-Guzman was walking on a green cross signal in the pedestrian crosswalk at Broadway and Cesar Chavez Avenue on Jan. 23, 2004, when she was struck by an MTA bus. She died at the scene.

MTA board members also awarded $450,000 to Ruth Ridimann, who was boarding a crowded bus last June when the doors closed on her and she was thrown backward, sustaining multiple injuries.
