BRIEFLY SUV DRIVER HURT IN APARTMENT CRASH.


VAN NUYS - An SUV slammed into a two-story apartment building Saturday morning, sending the driver to the hospital.

Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said the crash occurred at 8:21 a.m. in the 14400 block of Kittridge Street.

The SUV damaged the bathroom of the apartment and came to rest in the bedroom area, but no one was home at the time of the accident.

Police investigate death in custody

 officials are continuing to investigate the death of a man who died shortly after being taken into custody Friday.

 spokeswoman, said officers were called to the 5900 block of Cahuenga Boulevard at 10:25 p.m. on the report of a man with possible mental problems.

Officers found a 46-year-old male, whom they took into custody without incident, but as they were walking him to the car, he began having respiratory problems, officials said.

The man died at the scene, police said. Witnesses told police he had been using narcotics narcotics n. 1) techinically, drugs which dull the senses. 2) a popular generic term for drugs which cannot be legally possessed, sold, or transported except for medicinal uses for which a physician or dentist's prescription is required.  all day, authorities said.

His name was not released pending notification of relatives.

Terror-response training available

NORTHRIDGE - Information about a terrorism-response training exercise set to begin tonight at a Northridge shopping mall will be available on the Internet at www.lafd.org, officials said Saturday.

``Operation Dark Cloud'' will involve more than 500 people from various agencies. It will take place between 9 p.m. Sunday and 3 a.m. Monday at the Northridge Fashion Center Northridge Fashion Center is a large shopping mall located in Northridge, California. It opened in 1971. It was severely damaged during the Northridge Earthquake in 1994, but renovated extensively in 1995 and 1998. .

Alert issued after crimes in Venice

Police declared a tactical alert that affected officers in five divisions Saturday following a slaying and two separate incidents of men barricading themselves in homes in the beachside beach·side

A woman was found dead in her home just blocks from the beach about 10 a.m. Saturday, LAPD Officer Lucy Diaz said. No other details were immediately available.

 of another home near the beach threatening suicide, police said. Officers went into the home shortly after 6:30 p.m. and found the unidentified man dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police Officer Don Cox said.

Police also were dispatched to a nearby home where a man with a history of mental illness barricaded himself inside after a domestic dispute, Cox said. The man, who was not identified, was taken into custody about 3:20 p.m. without incident.
