Fatal Palmdale shooting probed

PALMDALE - Sheriff's deputies are investigating the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy.

The boy was apparently wounded in a shooting about 2 a.m. Sunday on Avenue S in Palmdale, then driven by friends to Antelope Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said Sgt. Vincent Burton of the Palmdale sheriff's station.

The boy's name was not immediately released.

Burton said the boy was shot during an exchange of gunfire between two cars, but he did not know whether the cars were parked or moving.

Sheriff's deputies on patrol in Palmdale later spotted a vehicle that resembled the one from which the fatal shot was fired and chased its driver into a house.

Deputies were questioning people in the house in connection with the slaying.

Autopsy provides little information

An autopsy Sunday failed to determine the cause of death for a 4- month-old Hacienda Heights boy who was left for hours in his mother's car, authorities said.

Pedestrians killed in crash near mall

SHERMAN OAKS - A man and woman were hit and killed Sunday night as they crossed Riverside Drive in front of the Sherman Oaks Fashion Square mall, authorities said.

The identities of the victims were not immediately released, but police described them as a Latino couple in their mid-30s.

The couple was crossing Riverside Drive from north to south just after 9 p.m. when they were struck by an eastbound Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, police said.

The victims were carrying a television set, a backpack and speakers when they were struck by the pickup, police said.

The 22-year-old driver of the truck told police he did not see the couple until they were directly in front of him, authorities said.

Man hurt in gun battle on freeway
