SUN VALLEY - A drunk driving suspect was being held for questioning Thursday night after leading officers on a short pursuit, police said.

Police tried to stop the driver near Sheldon Street and the Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California. Originally built as U.S. Highway 99, it was re-signed as Interstate 5 in 1964.  but a chase ensued before the suspect was apprehended more than 15 minutes later in the 8200 block of Tujunga Avenue, police said.

Supervisor fatally hit at loading dock

PACOIMA - A company supervisor was hit and killed Thursday morning when a truck backed into him, authorities said.

Zaven Demirsian, 50, of Pasadena was leaving stove-maker American Range in the 13500 block of Desmond Street, had put his briefcase in his car and walked back to the edge of the company's loading dock to call out to an employee.

It is the business and processing center of a diversified farming (notably dairying) area.  was backing up and apparently neither man saw the other before Demirsian was fatally struck, authorities said.

Property tax bills due come Monday

The first installment of 2001-02 property tax bills is due and payable by Monday, the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Assessor's Office said.

Payments can be made in person between 8 a.m and 5 p.m. at the downtown Kenneth Hahn Kenneth "Kenny" Frederick Hahn (August 19, 1920–1997) was a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for forty years from 1952 to 1992. Murdering ex-cop receives 15 to life

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Larry S. Knupp ordered Angela M. Shepard, 38, to prison for the murder of Audrey Gomez, 28, who once worked for Shepard at a youth counseling center. Shepard pleaded no contest to second-degree murder.

Investigators said Gomez was shot Aug. 24 at Shepard's home in Whittier, her body left in her car in the parking lot of a park.

The motive for the killing has never been publicly disclosed and investigators have only said it followed a heated argument.

Simi Valley to light its Christmas tree Christmas tree

Evergreen tree, usually decorated with lights and ornaments, to celebrate the Christmas season. The use of evergreen trees, wreaths, and garlands as symbols of eternal life was common among the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, and Hebrews.
 

SIMI VALLEY - The city will light its official Christmas tree at 6 p.m. today at Civic Center Plaza.

Mayor Bill Davis and several council members will help light the tree, and the Royal High School jazz band and choir will perform.

Inmate's kin file lawsuit over death

The family of an inmate who hanged himself while in custody sued Los Angeles County on Thursday, claiming ``deliberate indifference'' led to his death.

District upholds toy-gun decision

TARZANA - A school district panel backed a Tarzana Elementary School principal's decision to suspend a second-grader for bringing a toy gun to school.

Sabina Gonzales, the boy's mother, had appealed to the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  to have the one-day suspension expunged from her son's permanent school record, arguing it could jeopardize the 7-year-old's chances for enrollment in an academic honors program or future college scholarships.

The child was found to have violated the California Education Code prohibiting possession of an imitation firearm on campus.
