BRIEFLY STUDENTS WILL TAKE NEW EXIT EXAM.


Today most of the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Unified School District's 61,000 ninth- graders will take the first half of the state's new high school exit exam.

All but 9,000 or so students on vacation from year-round schedules are required to take the four-hour test on English Language English language, member of the West Germanic group of the Germanic subfamily of the Indo-European family of languages (see Germanic languages). Spoken by about 470 million people throughout the world, English is the official language of about 45 nations.  Arts. The same students will take the math portion Tuesday. Vacationing Track B students will take their English test on May 17 and math test on May 24.

About 4,000 Glendale and Burbank ninth-graders will also take the English test today and the math test on Tuesday.

Riordan leads trio to lobby for money

Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002. , Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Roy Romer and school board president Genethia Hayes will be in Washington D.C. today and Thursday to meet with federal officials - including President George W. Bush - to lobby for funding on education.

They expect to meet with Bush this morning. Later they will meet with members of key House and Senate committees on education and appropriations, including Sens. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. and House Education Committee chairman Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio.

The three are seeking more federal funding for Los Angeles schools for Title One programs, special education and educational technology. Riordan will also lobby for transportation funds.

 freshman pleads not guiltyA

SANTA BARBARA - A university freshman pleaded not guilty Tuesday to murder charges for allegedly running down five pedestrians with his car in Isla Vista, killing four people.

David Attias, 18, of Santa Monica stood without comment in an orange jail-house jumpsuit as defense attorney Bob Sanger entered the pleas on his behalf to all 11 felony counts, including four counts of murder.

A hearing was set for March 26.

FBI agent repels robbers with gun

An FBI agent shot two men who tried to rob him in front of his home in the Westchester area Tuesday, officials said.

The two, in their 20s, approached the agent and tried to rob him about 7 p.m., authorities said.

More than 30 police officers went to the neighborhood around Redlands Street and Gulana Avenue, where both suspects were taken into custody, officials said.

The agent was uninjured, said FBI spokesman Matthew McLaughlin.

Shooting victim found on on-ramp

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - Police found a wounded man on the Sherman Way on-ramp to the Hollywood Freeway on Tuesday night.

Los Angeles Police Department officers found the 30-year-old victim, who had been shot in the arm, said LAPD Officer Jason Lee.

Police said it appeared the victim might have been shot at another location.

The man's injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, Lee said.
