BRIEFLY STORY TIME SIGN-UPS PLANNED FOR JAN. 6.


Registration for Winter Story Time will take place at 10 a.m. Jan. 6 at the Valencia Library, 23743 W. Valencia Blvd., Valencia. Story-time sessions will begin the week of Jan. 13, and are available for toddlers and preschoolers with an evening ``pajama'' program for those in preschool and primary grades. Advance registration is required for the sessions. For information, call the library at (661) 259-8942.

Bootleggers Ball to ring in new year

Residents are invited to celebrate New Year's Eve at the annual Bootleggers Ball, a night of Mardi Gras-style fun featuring a buffet dinner, music, dancing, casino games, party favors and a midnight champagne toast, all beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Robinson Ranch, 27734 Sand Canyon Road, Canyon Country. Proceeds will benefit the Domestic Violence Center, which offers ongoing counseling programs, victims advocacy and an emergency shelter Emergency shelters are places for people to live temporarily when they can't live in their previous residence, similar to homeless shelters. The main difference is that an emergency shelter typically specializes in people fleeing a specific type of situation, such as battered  for families struggling with domestic violence. Volunteers needed to help count birds
