BRIEFLY STABBING NICKS INMATE'S HEART.


CASTAIC - An inmate at the North County Correctional Facility North County Correctional Facility (NCCF) is a Los Angeles County Jail, run by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Located approximately 40 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, it is one of four jails located within the Pitchess Detention Center (named after former  was stabbed Tuesday morning during a recreation-yard confrontation.

Several inmates were observed fighting about 9:20 a.m. and, after the fight was broken up, one was found to have multiple puncture wounds in his chest and upper arms, officials said. He was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

``Apparently it was much worse than it appeared from the outside,'' Sheriff's Lt. Clay Porlier said. ``I've been told he had a nick to his heart.''

, wrapped with newspaper for a handle, were found at the scene of the fight, Porlier said. The incident is under investigation.

The wounded inmate, whose name was not released, will remain at the hospital under guard until his condition allows for transfer to the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Medical Center downtown.
