Alleged remedies may not be herbal

LOS ANGELES - Federal and state authorities are investigating a line of alleged natural herbal remedies they say contain over-the-counter pain and sleep medications.

A 14-month undercover investigation of Thomas Hill Hardy, 62, culminated in a raid earlier this month at his Vista offices.

Authorities allege Hardy and his wife ran a business touting their garlic, thyme, vanilla and licorice licorice (lĭk`ərĭs, –rĭsh), name for a European plant (Glycyrrhiza glabra) of the family Leguminosae (pulse family) and for the sweet substance obtained from the root.  root remedies as cures for everything from cancer to arthritis.
