BRIEFLY SPEED POSSIBLE FACTOR IN CRASH.


A San Fernando man driving a Ford Mustang was apparently speeding before he slammed his car into a light pole and guard rail on the freeway Friday, killing himself and his 6-year-old son, authorities said Saturday.

Gabriel Vargas, 23, his son Gabriel and passenger Alberto Sanchez, 24, were traveling north on the Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California. Originally built as U.S. Highway 99, it was re-signed as Interstate 5 in 1964.  transition to the Ronald Reagan Freeway when the solo crash occurred about 2:50 p.m. Friday, according to coroner's reports and California Highway Patrol officials.

The boy was declared dead at the scene, and Vargas died en route to a hospital, authorities said. Sanchez was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

All three were thrown from the vehicle as a result of the crash, which backed up traffic for more than four hours Friday.

L.A. man named to water board

A Los Angeles man who formerly served on the Metropolitan Water District board of directors was appointed Friday to the state's Regional Water Quality Control Board by Gov. Gray Davis.

The governor's appointment of Larry Kosmont, 49, of Los Angeles, requires Senate confirmation.

Kosmont is the founder of Kosmont & Partners, a real estate consulting firm that specializes in economic development. The vehicles, an unmarked sedan to be used by a Moorpark detective and a minivan to be used by the high school deputy, have been funded by the Moorpark City Council but will be purchased by the county.

Record high of 71 set in Lancaster

LANCASTER - This High Desert city set a record winter high temperature Saturday, reaching 71 degrees, the National Weather Service said.

Water main break forces evacuation

MALIBU - A broken water main undermined a porch Saturday, causing it to break away, and forced officials to evacuate six homes.
