Slovakia beat Spain for its first Fed Cup title Sunday.

In Maspalomas, Canary Islands Canary Islands, Span. Islas Canarias, group of seven islands (1990 pop. 1,589,403), 2,808 sq mi (7,273 sq km), autonomous region of Spain, in the Atlantic Ocean off Western Sahara. They constitute two provinces of Spain. Santa Cruz de Tenerife (1990 pop. , the Slovaks won both singles to take an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five competition. Spain was trying for a sixth Fed Cup title.

Daniela Hantuchova beat Conchita Martinez 6-7 (8-10), 7-5, 6-4 and Janette Husarova downed Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario 6-0, 6-2. The doubles match was canceled.

Sanchez-Vicario played her record 100th Fed Cup match, but she was barely able to run after straining her right thigh during Thursday's semifinal.

Top-seeded Serena Williams will open play against Israel's Anna Smashnova on Thursday. Venus Williams is seeded second and will play Patty Schnyder of Switzerland when the $3 million tournament begins Wednesday at Staples Center.

--Marat Safin won his first title of the year, beating Lleyton Hewitt 7-6 (7-4), 6-0, 6-4 to win the Paris Masters for the second time.

--Cedric Pioline is retiring from tennis, ending a 13-year career for the former Wimbledon and U.S. Open runner-up.

Freshman Ofa Tulikihihifo added nine points and seven rebounds. Kim Gildersleeve finished with eight points and five assists. CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  will have one more exhibition game against P&P Lady Express on Nov. 15 before opening the season at home against Portland State on Nov. 22.

OLYMPICS: USA Boxing was placed on probation by the U.S. Olympic Committee for failing to meet its obligations as a national governing body.
