BRIEFLY SLAYING MOTIVE STILL UNDER REVIEW.


SYLMAR - Federal authorities on Friday were reviewing the killing of the Syrian-born owner of Chalet Liquor store to determine if the case is a hate crime, the FBI reported.

Ramez Younan, 50, was shot Wednesday night at the store in the 14000 block of Hubbard Street Hubbard Street is a road in Chicago, Illinois named for early settler Gurdon Saltonstall Hubbard. Where Hubbard Street passes over the Kennedy Expressway, the Expressway enters a tunnel made up of surface streets known as colloquially as "Hubbard's Cave.  in what police initially described as an apparent robbery attempt.

Man found dead on railroad track

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - The body of a man who appeared to be 25 to 30 years old was found on railroad tracks early Friday and police were investigating the death as a possible suicide, authorities said.

The man was hit and killed by a train as he walked westbound along the tracks near Tujunga Avenue and Vanowen Street, police said. It was unclear which train had hit the man, police said. The tracks are owned by Metrolink, but two Union Pacific trains passed through the area.

Burbank Airport to boost security

BURBANK - Burbank Airport announced plans on Friday to nearly double its police force, improve officer training and hire a public safety director to improve security in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority has approved increasing the airport police from 19 to 34 officers and enhancing the training of all personnel. In addition, a new director of public safety will oversee the airport's police and fire departments.

Memorial planned for crash victims

It will be located on the east side of the pier near Parking Lot B, and the shadow of the sundial's arm will cross a special plaque every Jan. 31 at the time of the crash.

Alaska Airlines is expected to pay for the project, costing at least $250,000, and the city likely will be responsible for its maintenance.

GAO urges delay in fighter program
