Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  and Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  have again maintained their status as the nation's two safest cities with more than 100,000 residents, FBI crime statistics show.

During the first half of 2000, Simi Valley ranked first in safety with only 822 serious crimes while Thousand Oaks was second with 1,032, records show.

The statistics are based on the serious crimes of murder, rape, aggrevated assault, robbery, burglary, arson, auto theft and larceny larceny, in law, the unlawful taking and carrying away of the property of another, with intent to deprive the owner of its use or to appropriate it to the use of the perpetrator or of someone else.  theft, authorities said.

Woman, 91, hit by school bus

OXNARD - A 91-year-old Oxnard woman suffered major head injuries Wednesday when she she was hit by a school bus while crossing an unmarked crosswalk, officials said.

Officials said the bus, which did not have any passengers at the time, was turning left when Rosa Garcia was struck by the side and knocked to the ground.

Fire sparked by power lines

VENTURA - Downed power lines were blamed for Tuesday night brush fire that burned 52 acres on a ridge near Crimea Fire and Hall Canyon roads, officials said Wednesday.

About 350 firefighters worked to entinguish the fire, which broke out shortly after 5 p.m. It was 80 percent contained by 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Charges were filed Wednesday against a USC student accused of raping an 18-year-old woman in Koreatown after threatening her with a 3-foot samurai sword.
