Shaquille O'Neal could miss all of training camp after undergoing successful surgery to repair a deformed toe Wednesday.

The Lakers will open camp in Honolulu on Sept. 29 and will train through Oct. 8. O'Neal is not expected to be cleared for running for about six weeks, meaning he might not return until as late as Oct. 10.

O'Neal is doubtful for the Lakers' first exhibition game, Oct. 7 against the Golden State Warriors, and also could miss the two exhibition games in Tokyo, Oct. 13-14. The Lakers will open the regular season Oct. 30.

O'Neal, who was suffering from a claw-toe deformity in his left pinky toe, will have to use crutches for the next two weeks, then should be cleared for conditioning work on a stationary bike.

--The National Basketball Developmental League will not be an option for former Fresno State point Tito Maddox or any other college basketball player who does not go through the NBA draft process, according to ESPN.

The 6-foot-4 Maddox, a preseason top-50 Wooden Award candidate and the 2001 WAC freshman of the year, was dismissed from Fresno State last week for accepting a plane ticket and game tickets from representatives of Franchise Sports America, according to Fresno State coach Jerry Tarkanian.

COLLEGE BASEBALL: USC has received a commitment from Jason Filary, an outfielder from Cypress High. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Filary also was recruited by Texas, California and Cal State Fullerton.

BOXING: Miguel ``The Mask'' Maturana, Colombia's former world amateur bantamweight champion, continues to be the focus of a country-wide search after allegedly beating his 54-year-old coach to death.

Police have issued an arrest warrant for Maturana, who is alleged to have had problems with drug abuse and has been accused of beating up his coaches in the past.
