BRIEFLY SECURITY GUARD IS SHOT IN BAR FIGHT.


VENTURA - A security guard was shot as he tried to save a bar customer Saturday morning, officials said.

The guard, identified as Michael Stephen Barrie Michael Lace Stephen, known as Michael Stephen, (born 25 September 1942), was the British Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Shoreham from 1992 until 1997, when his seat was abolished by boundary changes.  Montiel, 43, of Ventura, was hit by a bullet in the upper arm and was treated at a local hospital, the Ventura Police Department reported.

 Avenue a week ago and came back around 12:50 a.m. Saturday to settle the score with John ``Jack'' Dufau, another 24-year-old Ventura man, police said.

The two took the fight outside, where Williams pulled a pistol, officials said. Montiel tried to grab the gun before he was shot, and other patrons then wrestled the gun from Williams.

Deadline looms for property tax

The deadline for the second installment of 2003-04 property taxes is Monday.

To avoid a late penalty, payments must be received by 5 p.m. or postmarked before midnight, said Los Angeles County Assessor Los Angeles County Assessor is the office which deals with the tax-side to property in the county. The current assessor is Rick Auerbach. Prior to Auerbach taking office in 2000, Kenneth P. Hahn was assessor.

 construction getting under way

Overnight construction will be under way on three San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
 intersections early next week as the MTA continues work on the new Orange Line busway across the Valley.

Nighttime work will take place from 7 p.m. on Tuesday to 7 a.m. Wednesday in Encino on Lindley Avenue, between Oxnard and Topham streets, as well as in Woodland Hills, at the intersection of Variel Avenue and Victory Boulevard, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said.

Daytime work is scheduled to begin Monday in Valley Glen as crews reconstruct a portion of Oxnard Street, just east of Woodman Avenue. Overnight work there is scheduled from 7 p.m. on April 19 to 7 a.m. April 20.

Daytime work is expected to continue at all three intersections for coming months, with work typically scheduled from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. Residents should be notified of nighttime work, the MTA said.

Motorcyclist dies after 101 crash

A motorcyclist died after a crash as he rode north on the Ventura Freeway on Saturday morning, authorities reported.

Peter Nyarady, 45, of Camarillo was riding with a group of 40 or 50 others in his club just south of Mussel mussel, edible freshwater or marine bivalve mollusk. Mussels are able to move slowly by means of the muscular foot. They feed and breathe by filtering water through extensible tubes called siphons; a large mussel filters 10 gal (38 liters) of water per day.  Shoals when the crash occurred, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Nyarady was severely injured and was pronounced dead at a hospital about 10:20 a.m., officials said.
