The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will begin spraying an herbicide around the lakes at Hansen Dam Hansen Dam in Los Angeles County, California was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District in 1939 and 1940. The project is located near the northern edge of the San Fernando Valley on Tujunga Wash, about one mile below the confluence of the Big Tujunga Wash  to eradicate the troublesome Arundo donax plants, officials said Monday.

The plant, which resembles bamboo, is an invasive, non-native species that can quickly overtake native vegetation if not controlled and eradicated, said Fred-Otto Egeler of the Corps.

Egeler said people should avoid the treated areas, which will be recognizable by a greenish-blue dye where the herbicide has been sprayed.

Health care, jobs initiative issues

PACOIMA - Several San Fernando Valley-based organizations created an initiative to improve health care in the area and to foster jobs for low- income residents, it was announced Monday.

The Healthy Families/Healthy Jobs Initiative will be run by the Valley Economic Development Center and the Los Angeles Educational Partnership, using a nearly $1 million grant from the private California Endowment.
