BRIEFLY SANTA CLARITA WINS GRANT FOR TREES.


SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - City officials plan to use part of a $40,000 grant to replace trees removed during the construction of curbs, gutters and sidewalks in Newhall.

The Millennium Tree Planting Grant from the state will be used to line Chestnut chestnut, name for any species of the genus Castanea, deciduous trees of the family Fagaceae (beech or oak family) widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. They are characterized by thin-shelled, sweet, edible nuts borne in a bristly bur. , Walnut walnut, common name for some members of the Juglandaceae, a family of chiefly deciduous, resinous trees characterized by large and aromatic compound leaves. Species of the walnut family are indigenous mostly to the north temperate zone, but also range from Central , 16th and Newhall avenues with oak trees as part of the redevelopment plan for downtown Newhall.
