BURBANK - A Burbank man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder In the criminal law, attempted murder is committed when the defendant does an act that is more than merely preparatory to the commission of the crime of murder and, at the time of these acts, the person has a specific intention to kill.  after he allegedly stabbed his sleeping roommate Christmas morning, police said.

The stab wounds to Gutierrez's upper body were considered minor, while Guzman suffered a cut on his hand during the struggle.

Both were treated at an area hospital for their wounds.

Guzman was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and was held at Burbank city jail on $500,000 bail.

Two brothers die in rear-end crash

Man, 21, arrested in mother's death

Police arrested a 21-year-old man Monday in the fatal shooting of his mother early that morning.

Patricia Ann Ricks, 50, was shot several times in her southwest Los Angeles apartment in the 5500 block of Homeside Avenue, just after midnight, police said.

Robert Ricks Jr. fled after the shooting but was arrested later in the day, said Officer Elena Barba of the Los Angeles Police Department's Southwest station.

After police asked for the public's help in finding Ricks, citizens reported seeing him in an area about three miles west of the shooting. Officers arrested Ricks in the area about 1:30 p.m. Monday.

A neighbor said Patricia Ricks lived with her four daughters in the apartment and also took care of Robert Ricks Jr.'s 2-year-old son.
