OXNARD - Several hundred pounds of magnesium ignited Saturday at a metal-making plant, sending a large fireball and smoke into the air, authorities said.

Seven units from the Oxnard Fire Department and two teams from the Ventura County Fire Hazardous Materials squad responded at 10:11 a.m. to Halaco Engineering in the 6200 block of Perkins Road. Rain reacted with the chemical and ignited it, creating hydrogen gas, said Oxnard Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike O'Malia.

Burning gas tanker closes half of 101

OXNARD - The northbound side of the Ventura Freeway The Ventura Freeway is a freeway in southern California running from Ventura to Pasadena. It is the principal east-west route through Ventura County and in the southern San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County.  was closed for 2 1/2 hours early Saturday after a gasoline tanker truck overturned and burst into flames, the California Highway Patrol reported.

12-vehicle crash on I-5 due to hail

COALINGA - A 12-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 near Coalinga backed traffic up for about six hours Saturday.

Hail is to blame for the crash, which involved nine cars, two big rigs and a motor home. No major injuries were reported, but traffic was backed up about 11 miles, said California Highway Patrol officer Ralph Caggiano.
