Georgia Tech formed a committee Wednesday to look into the hiring of two assistant football coaches who had errors in their school-released biographies.

The three-man panel will review the hiring of defensive coordinator Rick Smith and receivers coach Tommie Robinson.

Smith, hired this month by new head coach Chan Gailey, admitted he never played on the football and baseball teams at Florida State, as his biography claimed.

After those discrepancies came to light, sports information director Mike Stamus and his staff contacted each assistant coach to make sure there were no other mistakes. That's when Robinson pointed out that he didn't earn a master's degree in education from Troy State, as the school originally said in a Jan. 4 news release.

--Andy Ludwig, who helped orchestrate a Fresno State offense that was one of the nation's best, was hired as Oregon's offensive coordinator.

Ludwig, the Bulldogs' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach the past four seasons, replaces Jeff Tedford, hired as Cal's new head coach.

--George Dickerson, a former UCLA athlete and assistant football coach, has died at age 88. Dickerson was a three-year varsity tackle and captain of the 1936 UCLA team. He spent 12 years as a UCLA assistant, serving as head coach for three games in 1958 after the death of head coach Red Sanders.

ARENA FOOTBALL: Avengers quarterback Tony Graziani signed a contract extension that will keep him with the team through 2004. Graziani played in two games last season before suffering a knee injury and is expected to be the team's starting quarterback this season.

Also, former USC quarterback and Cal State Northridge assistant coach Brad Otton said he will try out for the team Saturday. The Avengers expect 60 to 80 players at the tryout, including former USC defensive lineman Cedric Jefferson.
