Young mother's killer sentenced

VENTURA - Santa Paula gang member Alfredo Hernandez has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the 1998 shooting death of a 25-year-old mother while he and another gang member were robbing a store.

Hernandez, 23, and Jose ``Pepe'' Castillo each shot Mirna Regollar, a mother of two, after she reached for a silent alarm while they were holding up Junior's Market in Santa Paula, where she worked, prosecutors said.

The two were trying to get money to buy drugs, according to Castillo, who testified against Hernandez to spare himself the death penalty.

Hernandez, who was sentenced Tuesday, was convicted of first-degree murder in November.
