The only thing certain about pole day for the Indianapolis 500 is that Greg Ray is the favorite.

Ray, the 1999 series champion, has won 11 poles in his last 21 Indy Racing League The Indy Racing League, better known as IRL, is the sanctioning body of a predominantly American based open-wheel racing series.

The League consists of two series, the premiere IndyCar Series
 events, including last year's Indy 500 pole.

After turning the fast lap on three of the first five days since the 2 1/2-mile oval opened for practice, Ray knocked off a lap of 225.403 mph early in Friday's session. The only driver able to come close to that was Scott Sharp at 224.715 late in the day.

There will be seven hours of qualifying time today, the first of three days of time trials, and each of the drivers who draws for a spot in the qualifying line is guaranteed at least one shot at the pole if the line remains unbroken.

TENNIS: Jennifer Capriati needed two hours to pull out a thrilling 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory against defending champion Conchita Martinez at the German Open after losing the first four games of the match, then coming within a point of trailing 0-3 in the final set.

It was the best match so far at the $1.185 million clay-court event, which started with three of the world's top four players until No. 2 Venus Williams was upset Thursday.

Top-seeded Martina Hingis also won, besting Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
