BRIEFLY RAMOS 1ST LATINA MAYOR OF BURBANK.


BURBANK - Marsha Ramos is the new mayor of Burbank, after having been elected to the post by her colleagues on the City Council in annual rotation.

The Burbank City Council voted unanimously Monday to rotate in the new mayor and vice mayor. In so doing, Ramos became the first Latina mayor of Burbank.

``I hope that together we can address the issues that are most important to our city and sustain the quality of life our citizens deserve,'' Ramos said after she became mayor.

Ramos, who is formerly the city's vice mayor, replaces Stacey Murphy, whose title returns to that of city councilwoman. The new vice mayor is Jef Vander Borght.

Ramos has lived in Burbank since her family moved there when she was 6. Her husband's family has lived in Burbank since the early 1900s.

Man enters plea in Avalon blaze

BURBANK - A 41-year-old man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to setting a fire at the Avalon Hotel in Burbank after a dispute over $60, authorities said.

Benjamin Bolock, who lived at the residential hotel, was being held at Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.

He is accused of starting the fire in his unit Saturday night after a dispute with his roommate over the $60, said Battalion Chief Tracey Pansini of the Burbank Fire Department.

The fire destroyed 10 of the 20 units at the hotel, located at 126 E. Olive Ave., and caused $300,000 in damages. No one was injured in the blaze.

More women, kids live on Skid Row

More and more of the homeless on Skid Row are women and children, according to a study released by the University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission  on Tuesday.

In 1990, there were 168 women and 13 children within the eight-block area in Skid Row. By 2000, 1,251 women and 529 children were counted there, according to the study by USC's Center for Religion and Civic Culture.

Feds fund work on I-5, port route

Interstate 5 improvements are among the projects that will receive $20.2 million from the Federal Highway Administration The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is a division of the United States Department of Transportation that specializes in highway transportation. Busway work set for White Oak Ave.

ENCINO - Work is scheduled to begin Thursday on White Oak Avenue just north of Oxnard Street as part of the Metro Orange Line construction.

The Orange Line is the 14-mile busway that is due to begin service from Warner Center to the Metro Red Line subway's North Hollywood station in August 2005.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill Tuesday to allow the state to resume sending some $50 million a month to counties, after the funds were blocked by a series of court decisions and state laws over the vehicle license fee.
