BRIEFLY PRISON ORDERED IN ATTACK ON GIRL.


VAN NUYS - A 19-year-old Birmingham High School Birmingham High School is a public coeducational high school in the neighborhood/district of Lake Balboa in the San Fernando Valley section of the city of Los Angeles, California. The school is a part of District One of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).  student senior was sentenced Thursday to four years in prison for assaulting a 17-year-old girl who was raped by others after passing out during an off-campus ditch party in December.

Nathaniel Sanchez pleaded no contest Aug. 16 to assault with intent to commit rape. Jose Sanchez, the defendant's 18-year-old brother, and Alejandro Zamora, 17, were convicted of raping an unconscious person. A 14-year-old Van Nuys boy was sentenced to a juvenile camp after pleading guilty to being an accessory to the rape after the fact.

L.A. firefighters help New Yorkers

Local Catholics raise relief funds

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has collected $1.65 million since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and money will be used in Los Angeles and sent to diocesan bishops in New York and Washington, D.C., to help in relief efforts, officials said Thursday.

L.A. trial judge gains promotion

Gov. Gray Davis announced Thursday the appointment of veteran Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Judith Ashmann as an associate justice of the 2nd District Court of Appeal.

Ashmann, 57, of Los Angeles, has been a trial judge for 20 years and had previously served as supervising judge of the North Valley District.

Van Nuys resident hit, killed by car

PANORAMA CITY - A man who was hit and killed by a car as he crossed Roscoe Boulevard outside of a marked crosswalk was identified Thursday as Jose Albarado Escobedo, 56, of Van Nuys, police said.

The pedestrian was hit by a white Mazda traveling westbound at about 6:10 p.m. Wednesday in the 14200 block, police said.
