The girl was walking home from the school at 13325 Hubbard St. about 3:40 Wednesday when a man walking a dog chased and tried to grab her, said Los Angeles police Detective Corinne Malinka.

Described as an African-American between ages 15 and 25, weighing 160-180 pounds and wearing a white tank top and blue jeans, the man fled after the girl ran back onto campus, police said.

SALON ASSAULTS TO LEAD TO TRIAL

VAN NUYS - A 28-year-old man was ordered Thursday to stand trial on murder, attempted murder and other charges in connection with a string of beauty salon robberies and rapes in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Superior Court Judge Lloyd Nash ruled that prosecutors had enough evidence for Walter Antonio Centeno to be tried on charges that include one count each of murder and attempted murder.

Centeno, scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 24 in Van Nuys Superior Court, was arrested Sept. 15, 1998. Three weeks earlier, a warrant was issued for his arrest in a March 18 shooting at a North Hollywood salon and the sexual assault of an employee.

Police said Centeno was suspected in 28 robberies, including five involving sexual assaults at Valley beauty salons.

SPEAKER NAMES BOARD MEMBER

Wendy F. Brogin of Sherman Oaks has been appointed to the state New Motor Vehicle Board by Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa, D-Los Angeles.

Villaraigosa announced Brogin's appointment Thursday. The nine-member panel establishes regulations for licensing new cars, motor homes and off-highway motorcycles.

Brogin, whose background is in regional planning, now serves on the county Commission on Local Government Services.

A police spokesman declined to discuss the suit.

PADILLA'S STAFF TO HELP CLEANUP

PANORAMA CITY - City Councilman Alex Padilla's office will join the nonprofit group Casa Esperanza-Blythe Street Project in cleaning up the Blythe Street neighborhood this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

MAN TO BE TRIED FOR SHOOTINGS

SAN FERNANDO - A Lake Isabella man accused in the shooting deaths of a 468-pound Hells Angel and his girlfriend in an alleged money dispute must stand trial for murder, a judge ruled Thursday.

Superior Court Judge John C. Gunn found sufficient evidence to require Daniel Ray Waring to stand trial on two counts of murder and a weapons charge for the December 1998 deaths of ``Large Larry'' Lajeunesse and Tami Ann Brannigan bran·ni·gan
