Coast Guard helps sick man on boat

An ailing man aboard a small boat sailing between Hawaii and California was rescued on the high seas after his crewmates spent three days radioing for help.

An emergency team parachuted from a U.S. Coast Guard plane into the water alongside the boat on Friday. They treated the man, who was then transferred to a nearby cargo ship.

He was expected to be moved to the hospital ward of a Navy transport ship en route from Iraq to California.

The two crewmates of the 47-year-old man began issuing mayday calls after he suffered seizures and lost consciousness. Until Friday, the signals were too weak to be picked up by other ships.

The 32-foot Kai Aka had been sailing from Honolulu to San Francisco. Its crew began radioing for help when they were about 650 miles southwest of San Diego.
