Four men charged in Best Buy scam

Concert, parade mark St. Patrick's

St. Patrick's Day will be celebrated today, with a parade through downtown streets and a concert in Los Angeles' Pershing Square.

The parade, presented by the city fire department, will start at 11:30 a.m. at Flower and Fourth streets and wind its way to Pershing Square, bounded by Fifth, Sixth, Olive and Hill streets.

The Young Dubliners will perform at 12:30 p.m., and the Royal Crown Revue The Royal Crown Revue is a band formed in 1989 in Los Angeles, California. They play modern swing music and are credited with starting the Swing Revival movement.[1][2]  will give a concert, 5:30-7 p.m.

Far East building work breaks ground

Los Angeles officials broke ground Thursday on the restoration of the Far East Building in the historic core of Little Tokyo.

The Little Tokyo Service Center plans to open a cafe in the space previously occupied by the Far East Cafe, a community destination for 59 years before the 1994 Northridge Earthquake.

The restoration will be partly funded by $400,000 from the city's Urban Development Action grants.

$20 missing after break-in at school

WEST HILLS - Vandals used a crowbar to break into Hamlin Street Elementary School, where $20 was discovered missing from a cash box in the cafeteria, officials said Thursday.

The break-in was discovered about 6:30 a.m., when the school's plant manager noticed doors to the main office, nurse's office, principal's office, work room, cafeteria and old library opened, officials said. Items were in disarray, but no significant damage was reported.

Burbank, Glendale recycle 50%-plus

Burbank and Glendale are among 17 cities in Los Angeles County that have met a state law to recycle 50 percent of its waste, state officials announced Thursday.

According to the state Integrated Waste Management Board, Burbank is diverting 63 percent of its waste from landfill, one of the highest rates in the county. Glendale's recycle rate is 52 percent.
