L.A. to celebrate 222nd birthday

Blood drives set at 35 county sites

The Los Angeles chapter of the American Red Cross American Red Cross: see Red Cross.  sent out a call for blood donations Friday.

According to Red Cross Blood Services, only 5 percent of those eligible to give blood do so. Starting today and continuing through Monday, the Red Cross is holding blood drives at 35 sites in Los Angeles County, including Cerritos, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Pasadena, Van Nuys, West Covina and Woodland Hills.

According to the Red Cross, some 38,000 donations are needed in the United States every day.

Interested donors should call (800) GIVE LIFE (448-5433) to make an appointment.

An alleged member of a Russian kidnapping ring used hidden cell phones and tools dropped off by an accomplice in a foiled attempt to break out of his federal prison cell, authorities said.
