 VALLEY- A 40-year-old Simi Valley man died early Saturday when a car he was in went over the shoulder of the westbound Ronald Reagan Freeway, said California Highway Patrol officials.

Man shot pulling bottle from coat

Los Angeles County deputies shot a man because they feared he was attempting to reach for a gun, but the object he pulled from his coat was later identified as a beer bottle, a sheriff's deputy said Saturday.

Century Station deputies contacted a man standing near a car with five other men. His actions suggested to deputies that he had a gun, Castro said.

Deputies confronted the man and ordered him - in both English and Spanish - to show his hands, but he refused, Castro said.

The other men moved away from him as he quickly pulled a shiny object from his coat. Fearing it was a gun, the deputies shot the man, Castro said.

The man was taken to a hospital and was listed in critical condition, he said.

Ex-boyfriend opens fire on man

A young man who dropped off a date at her Jefferson Park home was followed by a jealous ex-boyfriend who opened fire on his rival when he stopped at a traffic light Saturday, police said.
