BRIEFLY OPPONENTS APPEAL OIL-PUMPING HOURS.

 homeowners group is appealing to the City Council today to stop full-time operation of an oil-pumping operation - comparing it to the decision to reopen the Sunshine Canyon Landfill.

The Neighbors for a Safe Environment are asking the council to reject an application to increase the operation from three to 24 hours per day in the Pico-Doheny area.

They also are seeking strict controls to prevent pollution, fumes or odors.

Padilla seeks funds for sewer hookups

Councilman Alex Padilla proposed Tuesday that money from the city's Neighborhood Preservation Program be used to help low-income families install sewer line hookups.

 crews check for nuclear residue

SIMI VALLEY - EPA officials surveyed a building Tuesday at the Santa Susana Field Lab for any remaining signs of radioactive contamination as they prepared the structure for demolition.

90-minute search nets theft suspect
