BRIEFLY ONE KILLED, 3 HURT AS CAR STRIKES TREE.


BURBANK - One person died and three others were injured when the car they were riding in ran off the road and hit a tree Sunday afternoon, Burbank police said.

Two of the people were in critical condition, but the third person's injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, officials said.

The four were in the 3100 block of Lamer Street around 3 p.m. when the Toyota crashed.

Man barricades himself in home

NORTH HILLS - Police took a man into custody Sunday after he barricaded himself in his home for five hours, officials said.

Police finally used tear gas tear gas, gas that causes temporary blindness through the excessive flow of tears resulting from irritation of the eyes. The gas is used in chemical warfare and as a means for dispersing mobs.  to take the man into custody shortly after 4 p.m.

Police went to the home around 11 a.m. and the man locked himself inside and refused to come out.

Services planned for slain deputy

DIAMOND BAR - Funeral services are set for today in Diamond Bar for a sheriff's deputy fatally struck by deputy gunfire during a confrontation at a motel with a man armed with a pellet gun a gun that fires small pellets, less than 3 mm diameter, usually made of metal.
