OJAI - A 64-year-old man who died after falling overboard from a sailboat on Lake Casitas Lake Casitas is a lake in Ventura County, California. It was formed by Casitas Dam on Coyote Creek, two miles (3 km) before it joins the Ventura River. Santa Ana Creek and North Fork Coyote Creek also flow into the lake.  was identified Monday as John Douglas John Douglas is a name shared by a number of notable individuals:

Reopening LAX's main road mulled

Strickland won't seek county post

CAMARILLO - Assemblyman Tony Strickland, R-Moorpark, announced Monday he will not run to replace retiring Ventura County Supervisor Frank Schillo of Thousand Oaks.

Strickland, who faces term limits in 2004, had toyed with the idea of running for the nonpartisan 2nd District job during the uncertainty of state redistricting redistricting: see legislative apportionment. .

So far, only Thousand Oaks City Councilwoman Linda Parks has formally announced her candidacy for Schillo's seat.

The Van Nuys Superior Court jury deliberated about a day before convicting Kirell Francis Taylor, 26, of first-degree murder for the Feb. 10, 1999, death of Christopher Rawlings, who was abducted abducted Distal angulation of an extremity away from the midline of the body in a transverse plane and away from a sagittal plane passing through the proximal aspect of the foot or part, or away from some other specified reference point  at his home on Feb. 8, 1999, and forced into the trunk of his car. Attacks' effects on state gauged

VAN NUYS - A newly created task force will hold public hearings to gauge the impact of the East Coast terrorist attacks on California's economy and public safety, Assembly Speaker Robert Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, announced Monday.

The bipartisan Speaker's Task Force on the Impact of Terrorism on California will hold its first meeting Tuesday in Sacramento. At the closed session, officials will brief members on the state of security in California since the Sept. 11 attacks.

A public hearing will follow in Los Angeles on Oct. 15 to examine both the security and economic implications facing the state.

Benefit to jobless boosted by Davis

SACRAMENTO - Gov. Gray Davis signed a flurry of bills Monday, including a measure boosting unemployment benefits, four energy-related measures and an effort to prevent meningitis outbreaks.

Under Senate Bill 40, authored by Sen. Richard Alarcon, D-San Fernando, people who are laid off will receive maximum weekly checks of $330 starting Jan. 1, up from $230 per week. There will be additional increases of $40 per week in each year until 2005, when the maximum unemployment insurance check will be $450 per week.
