CAMARILLO - Officials identified the victim from Tuesday morning's fiery crash on the Ventura Freeway The Ventura Freeway is a freeway in southern California running from Ventura to Pasadena. It is the principal east-west route through Ventura County and in the southern San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County.  as Sophia Colling, 73, of Camarillo.

Colling died of probable blunt force head injuries and asphyxiation asphyxiation /as·phyx·i·a·tion/ (as-fix?e-a´shun) suffocation; the stoppage of respiration.

Parents detained after child's death

Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  police detained the parents of a 3-year-old North Hollywood girl who died on an operating table at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles on Wednesday night.

Paramedics sent to the 11300 block of Califa Street in North Hollywood about 7:45 p.m. airlifted the girl to the hospital, said Sgt. Arthur Reyna of the Los Angeles Police Department's Northeast Division.

The girl suffered a head injury, and doctors found ``a few other things on the body'' that aroused their suspicion about child abuse, Reyna said.

Detectives with the child abuse unit were notified about the death, he said. The girl's body will be turned over to the coroner's office for an autopsy, a hospital representative said.

Topanga Canyon acreage buy OK'd

Nearly 1,700 acres of Topanga Canyon land that once belonged to William Randolph William Randolph (1650 - April 11, 1711) was a colonist and land owner who played an important role in the history and politics of what became the U.S. state of Virginia.

The Los Angeles Police Department was put on tactical alert Wednesday afternoon when a large crowd gathered after a shooting in a Watts housing project, police said.

Helmeted officers with batons and nonlethal firearms formed a line outside apartments near 103rd Street and Lou Dillon Avenue.

Inmates can file for suit millions

Former prisoners of the Los Angeles County jail who were held beyond their release dates and strip-searched can leave their names and numbers on a Web site to collect their portion of a $27 million class-action lawsuit settlement, attorneys said Wednesday.

Hahn announces panel nominees

Mayor James Hahn on Wednesday released a list of 44 nominees to various commissions to fill a number of vacancies before a city deadline takes effect.

Among the nominees are Ellen Stein, who was reappointed to the Board of Public Works and is the wife of new Airport Commissioner Ted Stein. Also, Hahn reappointed Kathleen Riordan, daughter of former Mayor Richard Riordan, to the Board of Animal Regulation.

Another former commissioner, Robert Chick, former husband of Controller Laura Chick, was named to the Library Commission.

Motor home crash leaves 9 injured

CASTAIC - Nine people were injured Wednesday in a motor home that was hit in the rear and became sandwiched between two big rigs on the Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California. Originally built as U.S. Highway 99, it was re-signed as Interstate 5 in 1964.  in Castaic.

Two of the adults from the motor home - a married couple believed to be from Canada - were airlifted to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. The man, 46, was listed in critical condition, and his 44-year-old wife was in stable condition.

Seven others in the motor home, including children, suffered minor injuries.
