VENTURA - A Nevada gambling company has proposed turning a part of Channel Islands Harbor into Indian land so a casino with slot machines and gaming tables can be opened.

Experts in tribal law say the proposal is most likely doomed by an array of federal and state regulations governing Indian gaming.

Clinton brother charged with DUI

$5 million on tap to offset layoffs

Gov. Gray Davis announced $5 million in job training to assist workers being displaced by aerospace and defense layoffs.

The Private Industry Council Aerospace Network project in Southern California administers the job training programs.

Telemarketing tactics questioned

Four area telemarketing firms that allegedly implied to senior citizens and minorities that their neighborhoods might get less police protection unless they contributed money were called on the carpet.

Students protest name change idea

About 2,000 students walked out of class at Crenshaw High School Crenshaw High School is a secondary school located in South Los Angeles, California.

The school first opened in 1968 and currently enrolls an average of 2,600 students.
 on Wednesday to protest a possibility that the school might be renamed for an area congressman.

Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  officials are considering renaming the campus for Rep. Julian Dixon, D-Los Angeles, a leader of the Congressional Black Caucus Congressional Black Caucus, organization of African-American members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Founded in 1970, it addresses legislative concerns of African Americans and other minority citizens, such as employment, welfare reform, minority business  who died in December at 66. However, no formal proposal has been made to the school board.
