BRIEFLY OASIS SHELTER GETS BLUE SHIELD GRANT.

LANCASTER - The Valley Oasis Shelter was among 100 domestic-violence shelters that received at least $1,000 each from the Blue Shield of California Blue Shield of California is a not-for-profit health insurance provider headquartered in San Francisco, California. An independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, Blue Shield of California is an incorporated, wholly owned subsidiary of California Physicians'  Foundation.

The foundation will distribute nearly $140,000 in contributions to every domestic-violence shelter in California that receives state funds.

``Violence between intimate partners is shockingly common, and these shelters serve the most acutely endangered victims of domestic violence - women and children. The grant we're making demonstrates our ongoing commitment to supporting the shelters' efforts,'' said Dr. Jeffrey Rideout, president of the Blue Shield of California Foundation.

All of the shelters selected to receive the grants also receive funding from either the state Department of Health Services Department of Health Services may refer to:
  • Los Angeles County Department of Health Services
  • California Department of Health Services a California state agency
 or the Office of Criminal Justice Programs. The state agencies monitor domestic-violence service providers to ensure that staffers are credentialed and that minimum standards are met.

Davenport, Runner to speak at chamber

Davenport, a Democrat, and Runner, a Republican, are campaigning for the 36th Assembly District seat now held by Runner's husband, George, who is leaving office due to state term limits.

The debate will be part of a luncheon that begins at 11:30 a.m. at Medrano's Mexican Restaurant, 44276 10th St. W.

A four-member media panel will ask the candidates questions, and members of the audience will be able to submit questions in writing that the panel will select.

Cost is $15 for chamber members and $20 for nonmembers.

Universal Health posts healthy profits in 2002

For the nine months ended Sept. 30, its earnings were $131.5 million, the company said.

The earnings represent a 35 percent increase in earnings per diluted share for the three-month period and a 31 percent increase for the nine-month period over the comparable periods in 2001, the company said.

Revenues increased 13 percent to $813 million in thethree-month period and by 15 percent to $2.42 billion in the nine-month period, the company said.

Universal, which plans to build a hospital in Palmdale, noted that it opened a 371-bed hospital in 2000 and will open a 176-bed hospital in Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States.  and a 120-bed hospital in Florida next year.
