State Farm hikes car insurance tab

SANTA ANA - The 3 million California drivers who carry State Farm auto insurance will see an average 6.9 percent rate increase on their next renewal notices, the company announced Friday.

The premium increase, State Farm's first since 1989, will go into effect March 15.

Rising costs for car repairs and medical bills, plus a 6 percent increase in claims in 2001, are driving the rate hike, said Scott Smith, spokesman for the State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. in Costa Mesa.
