BRIEFLY NEW SNOWSTORM EASES L.A. WORRIES.


A late winter storm in the Eastern Sierra along with continuing conservation efforts should mean adequate water supplies in Los Angeles this year, officials said Tuesday.

Department of Water and Power officials said the storms of the past month in the Sierras generated enough snow to insure the city's needs are met.

POLICE NEED HELP FINDING SUSPECT

GRANADA HILLS - Police asked for the public's help Tuesday in finding a bank robbery suspect who has hit at least two banks in the San Fernando Valley.

David DeLeon, 43, is suspected of robbing on Monday his own bank - Bank of America, 16944 San Fernando Mission Blvd., Granada Hill - where he holds a merchant account, said Detective Mike Mejia of the Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery-Homicide section.

He is also suspected of robbing the Bank of America at 8720 Balboa Blvd in Northridge on Jan. 26, police said.

Moving Expenses
Deductible expenses that are related to moving an individual and/or his or her family and possessions for employment reasons.

You are allowed to deduct "reasonable" costs, such as renting a moving van. You cannot deduct the cost of meals while traveling for this move.
 

Los Angeles city officials, looking to boost hiring for the Police Department, approved a $2,000 moving allowance for all new recruits who are accepted into the Police Academy.

The City Council also approved the payment of a $200 finder's fee to anyone who recommends a person who becomes a police officer.

LITERACY PROGRAM WINS TEEN HONOR

NORTHRIDGE - A San Fernando Valley seventh-grader who created a program to fight illiteracy illiteracy, inability to meet a certain minimum criterion of reading and writing skill.

The exact nature of the criterion varies, so that illiteracy must be defined in each case before the term can be used in a meaningful way. In 1930 the U.S. Bureau of the Census defined as illiterate any person over ten years of age who was unable to read and write in any language.
 was named one of California's top two youth volunteers of 2000 in a nationwide program, officials announced Tuesday.

Robyn Strumpf, 13, of Northridge, was one of two California winners of the fifth annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.

Strumpf was nominated by Sierra Canyon Middle School in Chatsworth for creating ``Project Books and Blankies,'' a service project that aims to fight illiteracy by providing books along with handmade blankets to children.

As a state honoree, she will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., in May.

PAP TEST PROGRAM BEING EXTENDED

Los Angeles County is extending an offer of free Pap smears through Feb. 29 at six county locations.

A free health assessment is also provided to women along with the test for cervical cancer, a potentially deadly disease easily treated if detected early.

Local medical centers offering the free tests include Mid Valley Comprehensive Health Center in Panorama City, San Fernando Health Center in San Fernando and High Desert Hospital in Lancaster.
