A spokesman for the Bus Riders Union said the MTA needs to add at least an additional 250 new buses. He said his group would not be opposed to the MTA going forward with rail projects if it was in compliance with the consent decree.

 unveiled a plan Thursday to give tipsters $1,000 rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone engaged in illegal dumping or littering.

City Council President Alex Padilla Alex Padilla is a politician in California. He was elected as the State Senator for the 20th District of California in November 2006 and was inaugurated in early December. In order to enter the Senate he had to resign as Councilman for the 7th District on the Los Angeles City  joined Delgadillo to outline the plan, which would need to go to the council and mayor for approval.

Education board hopefuls sought

CAMARILLO - Candidates can now apply to fill a vacated seat representing the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  and Moorpark areas on the Ventura County Board of Education.

The board will interview candidates at a public meeting at 4 p.m. Monday. Application packets are available at the Ventura County Superintendent of Schools office, 5189 Verdugo Way, Camarillo.

Children can golf for just one dollar

Youth golfers between the ages of 7 and 17 will be able to hit the links for just $1 next month, under the Department of Recreation and Parks Junior Golfer Month in August.

The offer applies to all 13 city-run golf facilities, for both reserved and walk-up rounds. Golfers who are 18 years old can also play for $1 if they graduated from high school this year. Those under 14 must pass a certification test in order to play.

State's top court upholds legal pot

SAN JOSE - Californians who have a doctor's approval to smoke marijuana are protected from conviction for violating state drug laws, the state Supreme Court ruled Thursday.

The unanimous decision - the first time the court has ruled on the state's controversial medical marijuana initiative - could reduce the number of prosecutions for growing and possessing the drug. It also bolsters the law by making it easier to defend against such prosecution under the measure that was approved by voters in 1996.
