BRIEFLY MOVER MUST PAY FOR BREAKING LAW.


The owner of a Sylmar moving company pleaded no contest Wednesday to a half-dozen counts of violating state codes regulating moving companies, prosecutors said.

Suffrin also must pay $2,000 in investigative costs. And he and Nation Wide Moving Inc. were ordered to pay $1,500 in restitution to the victim, in addition to any amount awarded in a pending small-claims case.

The case stemmed from a June 2002 job in which the company allegedly failed to deliver glass tabletops and an oil painting.

South L.A. Kmart victim of robbers

Police sought five gunmen who robbed a Big Kmart in South Los Angeles South Los Angeles is the official name for a large geographic and cultural area lying to the southwest and southeast of downtown Los Angeles, California. Extreme cat lover given probation

VAN NUYS - A West Hills woman who kept five dozen cats on her property pleaded no contest to five charges Wednesday and was ordered to stay away from veterinary hospitals and locations that do animal rescues or adoptions.

Van Nuys Superior Court Judge Michael Hoff also sentenced Margaret Weems, 58, to three years' probation, along with mandatory counseling, and ordered her to keep no more than three cats, said Deputy District Attorney Tracy Watson.

Additionally, she must discontinue her association with the Canoga Park-based Angel Puss and Pooch Rescue, Watson said.

Sixty cats were found on Weems' property by county animal control investigators in November 2001, according to the prosecutor. She was on probation at the time for not having a kennel license, Watson said.

Prescribed burn to be Wednesday

A prescribed burn is planned for Wednesday at the Mulholland Highway and Los Virgenes Road in Malibu Creek State Park Coordinates:

Malibu Creek State Park is a California state park near Malibu, in Calabasas. It opened to the public in 1980, using property purchased from 20th Century Fox that the studio had owned since 1946 along with adjoining properties.
