BRIEFLY MOTORIST LEAPS TO SAFETY; TRAIN HITS CAR.


SUN VALLEY - Police on Wednesday called a motorist ``lucky'' after she managed to jump out of her car moments before a train destroyed her vehicle that stalled on railroad tracks a day earlier.

Sofia Lopez, 48, of North Hollywood, was stalled in her car at a railroad crossing at Sunland Boulevard and San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the  about 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Suddenly, police said, she heard train bells and sirens.

Syphilis outbreak baffles officials

County health officials reported Tuesday an outbreak of syphilis among gay men.

The sexually transmitted infection has been found in 23 men within the last two weeks. The finding puzzles health officials who said that in recent years, syphilis has been reported predominantly among heterosexual men and women.

Padilla pushes new baseball field

A Los Angeles official called on Wednesday for the Recreation and Parks Department to take action on a lease with the Little League of Americafor a new baseball field in the Dronfield Area of Hansen Dam.

Councilman Alex Padilla's proposal, to be considered by the City Council next week, would approve the lease to take advantage of a grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.
