SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - A 34-year-old Simi Valley man on a Suzuki 750cc GXSR motorcycle died in the 1100 block of Fitzgerald Avenue following a police pursuit, it was reported Friday.

James Vargas attempted to pass a Dodge pickup truck but died after he hit the driver's side of the truck, police said. Vargas was thrown 100 feet.

Police gave chase at 8:12 p.m. Thursday after noticing Vargas speeding toward the First Street area at 90 mph, officers said. An officer attempted to stop Vargas at a red signal at Bennett Street but he sped off when the light turned green.

Shot man unable to survive surgery

OXNARD - A 26-year-old Oxnard man who was shot in the chest several times at this home late Thursday died during surgery, police said.

Valley businesses invite candidates

About 60 of the 111 candidates for Valley mayor and city council will meet with the public Monday afternoon at a forum sponsored by Valley business associations.

Weapon fire lethal at Oxnard Circle K

OXNARD - A 23-year-old Oxnard man was fatally shot Thursday night in the parking lot of a Circle K store in the 1900 block of North Ventura Road, police reported Friday.

Juan Ramirez was transported to St. John's Hospital following the 7:47 p.m. incident and died from multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

Police on Friday continued to search for the motive and assailant.

Vons to pay fine for chicken rip-off

VENTURA - Vons Cos. Inc. has been ordered to pay $3,340 in fines and restitution for selling short-weighted chicken in stores throughout Ventura County, District Attorney Michael Bradbury announced Friday.

Vons was convicted of selling chicken products that weighed less than the labels stated in September 2001 and February 2002, officials said.

Judge Edward Brodie announced the sentence for the company Thursday on two misdemeanor counts of violating business and professional codes.

Burroughs High to welcome public

BURBANK - The public can tour John Burroughs High School John Burroughs High School is a public high school located in Burbank, California. Emilio Urioste, Jr. is the current principal. The school was built in the 1920's, but wasn't established as a high school until 1948.
